What follows is a journal written by one of the operatives in the second XCOM campaign, Alan Robertson.
Operation Fallen Glove – Part 4
The story so far: We received word that ADVENT found a resistance outpost. We have moved in to rescue civilians and take out the ADVENT forces in the area. We were already short one man due to injuries, and now another XCOM soldier has died in the battle, but we fight on…
Not hearing or seeing any alien movement, we press forward. Roberts spots another survivor near another building and rushes over to assist him with escaping. Keeping on par with the squad’s luck today, this civilian turns out to be a faceless in disguise. We watch as the skin melts away and the blob starts to turn into the Clayface looking beast. Seeing that Roberts is pinned down and needs to reload, Ye lines up a shot and fires at the beast and takes it down with one shot. Kabosky moves out of the building and takes cover behind a generator at the side of the building and goes into overwatch.
From his position, he spies a berserker start to move toward two civilians. He takes a reactionary shot at the hulking beast but misses. Following closely behind the berserker is an ADVENT Mec and another heavy lancer. As they move forward the two civilians scatter and try to flee.
Ye remains in her position on the roof and eyes each of her regular and deadeye shots. She finally settles on a regular shot against the Mec unit and tears into its armor and shreds some of its mechanical components. Roberts busts into the building she was by to assist another civilian in escaping. I hold my breath and wait for another Faceless to appear, but it seems luck is finally catching up with us and the civilian is an actual civilian and escapes out of the area. Roberts then takes the opportunity to reload her rifle to be ready for the remaining alien forces. Kabosky stays in cover behind the generator and decides to finish off the Mec with a volley of cannon fire that leaves his cannon empty and needing to be reloaded.
The berserker rushes forward and slams his fist into Kabosky. His armor cushions the blow slightly, but you can tell he still felt the brunt of most of the attack and the blow has left him disoriented. The heavy lancer rushes towards one of the civilians and goes to kill him with his baton, but the civilian scurries away from the blow and the lancer.
Seeing Kabosky in trouble, Ye lines up a deadeye shot that rips into the berserker’s hide. The beast roars in pain and enrages. Roberts moves to the window of the building and finishes off the berserker with a rifle blast before he can do any more damage to Kabosky. Kabosky moves to the outside of the window Roberts is by and takes cover and reloads his cannon.
Down at the corner of the building Roberts is in, we watch as yet another civilian turns into one of the faceless beasts. The heavy lancer rushes off and again misses with his baton against the civilian he’s going after. The faceless moves out of the building and charges towards Kabosky. We watch as it swipes its claws at him and tears through his armor and shreds the skin. Kabosky is still standing, but only barely. Luckily, this pain seems to clear his head and he doesn’t look to be disoriented any longer.

I have been an avid gamer for 32 years now. It started with the Atari 2600 my parents bought me as a child (my mom still says she regrets that decision), and I have never looked back. For my gaming, I enjoy RPG and strategy games the most, but I will play almost all games. Besides gaming, I am a family man (beautiful wife and three wonderful children) and a healthcare IT professional. So, gaming time is a premium for me, but I make the most of every chance I get.
