In cinema they are always remaking movies with much success. Look at War of the Worlds, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Scarface. Imagine if gaming was done in a similar way and not just backward compatibility. What games might you want to play on today’s consoles? Especially with the “Xbox One X” (rumored name for Project Scorpio) to release this holiday season as the most graphically sophisticated console ever. Let’s take a trip back in time to see what games would be great remakes for our current console generation.
This game was possibly the first action adventure game paving the way for games like Tomb Raider. It has all you really need in a game; snakes; scorpions; alligators; ladders; dungeons; and of course pits. I have fond memories of this game swinging from vine to vine over treacherous waters to avoid the chomping teeth of the gators below. Current consoles would take this game to another level. Even if they decided to keep it a 2D side scroller like Limbo or Inside, it would be great. Some tweaks to the game mechanics to make it a bit more challenging and some additional plot line would make this a fun game to play through again. If virtual reality takes off as it is expected to in the near future, imagine this game in VR! I think it would be a blast.
1987’s Double Dragon
There are just not enough story driven martial arts games anymore! Yes, I’m aware that Mortal Kombat and others are taking their fighting games to new levels with campaign modes but this is mainly driven by story cutscenes preempting a fight scenario. I would love to play an open world martial arts game in which you have the complex fighting of today’s combat systems paired with the story of Double Dragon. If you’re a bit rusty on the plot line of this one it’s your run of the mill story about twin martial artists who take it upon themselves to rid the urban city of gang banger thugs who often also are moderately trained in similar fighting styles. I think this would be a fun story to play through with modern graphics and mechanics. You can’t tell me open world martial arts gaming with a cheesy 80’s plot line wouldn’t be awesome.
1987’s Top Gun: Second Mission
The film Top Gun is without question one of the most memorable movies from the 80’s. The game, not so much. If today’s game developers and programmers remade this classic movie into a “Triple A” title I believe many would purchase for nostalgia alone. The game as I recall it was merely a flying simulator with decent dogfight missions, but the Top Gun story has so much more potential. Imagine if they turned it into an RPG in which you create your character, make your own “call sign” (and of course choose Maverick or Goose because they’re awesome), attend the Top Gun flight school and have to work your way up the ranks to be given the title “Top Gun”. This could include side quests like romancing your female flight instructor, competing in some beach volleyball matches in your leisure time and buzzing the tower with a fly by. Mechanics like Mass Effect has for conversation and the impact it has on the story would be cool too. That way you could engage in provocative conversations with your flight schoolmates by choosing between dialogue such as “You can be my wingman anytime” or “That’s right Ice...man. I am dangerous”. This would be a fun story to play a character in and not just another flight simulator, there’s so much more potential.
Will This Ever Happen?
These games are not likely to ever see a return to the newer consoles unfortunately but it is fun to think of the possibilities with today’s technology. While I love playing brand new stories I also enjoy reminiscing about past gaming experiences. Remakes of old games seems like a fun idea to bring some nostalgia back to an increasingly older generation of gamers. These classic games may not be in the memories of young gamers but remaking movies and games is a way to keep their stories alive forever.
Leave a comment if you remember these games. What games would you want remade with today's technology?
I love gaming! I love being a Dad to two young children! I love being a husband! What's great about my life is I've got kids who are interested in gaming and a wife who understands my need to game. I grew up in the 80's playing Nintendo classics and dabbled a bit with PlayStation before seeing "the light" that is Xbox. I love everything about it and am looking forward to sharing my experiences through the lens of a gamer, dad/husband and as a gamer with a Master's Degree in Psychology. Let the analyzing begin!
