Pre-Operation Notes

Command has narrowed down the area that the alien Blacksite is located in but not gotten it’s exact location yet.  The current plan is for the scientists to research resistance communications, and then we plan to make contact with local resistance in the area to get it pinned down.

In the meantime, we are scanning to find any supplies we can use.  Research has also finished a project on modular weapons.  Now, any of the spare parts we can scavenge from the aliens, we can attach to our weapons back at base to upgrade them.

Engineering finished clearing out alien debris on the ship.  They are now working on turning the area into an Advanced Warfare Center.  This will allow us soldiers to cross-train and learn skills we normally might not be able to.  It will also assist in decreasing the amount of time needed to heal from injuries for us.

Command’s scanning seems to have paid off.  From what I gathered, they broadcast a wide area signal and a small group was found that wishes to join the resistance.  Two of them appear to be soldier material and are now Rookies with XCOM.  Welcome aboard Rk. Vanya Gusev and Rk. Maximilian Lange.

Operation Furious Prince – March 14th, 2035

The Council sent a transmission to Command about a VIP to the resistance that is currently being hunted by ADVENT.  Our job is to deploy to the area, rescue Dr. Konrad Schmidt, and extract him and ourselves from the battlefield.  The location is in the ADVENT Central Precinct in Kano.

The team for this mission is myself, Sq. Kelly, Sq. Ishikawa, and Sq. Yosef.  Going through the salvage we have gotten from missions, I’ve upgraded my sniper rifle with a scope to provide me better aim.  I also decided to get a new paint job for it to mark it as my own.

As we land, we’re dropped right at Dr. Schmidt’s location.  That is when Central gives us the bad news:  ADVENT already knows we’re here.  So our positions will not be concealed.  So, much for hitting them with the element of surprise this time.  Ishikawa moves forward first and up the window of the building in front of us and immediately sees an officer and a solder on the roof through the skylight.  They quickly drop down into the building.  Sadly, they are out of sight for the rest of us, so we cannot get a good shot at them from our position.  So, the rest of us move into cover positions so we’re not easy targets for ADVENT.  Dr. Schmidt moves as far away from the enemies as he can while still staying in our sight and behind cover.

I watch as the ADVENT officer points at Kelly and says something in their language.  I can only guess that he was marking her as the main target for them to focus on.  The soldier moves behind cover and prepares to take a shot if any of us move at him.  Luckily, he doesn’t get a chance as his position is right in range for Ishikawa to mow him down with a burst from his minigun.  Yosef moves to the roof of the building.  I think he hopes to get a better angle on the officer and a chance to get a view of the extraction zone.  Kelly blasts the officer with her shotgun, injuring him but not taking him down.  I take the opportunity to line up a sniper shot and finish him off before he can do anything else.  Dr. Schmidt moves up to find another cover opportunity.

Ishikawa makes a dash for the far corner of the building to take cover and doesn’t spot any bad guys from his position.  So, we all rush forward as far as we can to find new cover and get closer to the extraction zone.  Yosef from his position on the rooftops lets us know he sees a sectoid and soldier guarding the extraction zone.  Very first thing the sectoid does is fire a mind blast at Yosef, and I hear him start to panic.  He drops through the skylight and cowers by a window and lets a wild blast fly at the soldier, but he misses.  The soldier moves up and closer to Yosef.  Once he’s behind cover and Kelly gets her chance, she fires a shotgun blast at the soldier but misses.  Ishikawa and myself both head to the roof to get a higher vantage point on the enemies.  Now wanting to be left by himself, Dr. Schmidt follows us.

The sectiod takes this chance to reanimate the dead soldier.  Yosef lets us know he’s regained his composure.  Wanting vengeance, I see him draw his sword and charge at the sectoid.  Unfortunately, the soldier was in overwatch and fires a shot at him that hits its mark.  He’s injured, but not down, and he continues his dash at the sectoid.  His sword cuts deeply, and I hear the sectoid scream out in pain, but he’s still standing, but just barely.  Kelly dashes forward and finishes off the sectoid with a sword slash of her own.  Once the sectoid is down, the psi-zombie (as we’ve taken to calling them) drops.  I line up a shot and take down the trooper that shot Yosef.  Ishikawa moves forward to get closer to the extraction zone, and Dr. Schmidt follows him closely.  Either there are no ADVENT forces left in the area, or they are out of range, but we all make it to the extraction zone and leave the area without any issues.

Time to head home.  Five enemies killed, the VIP safe, and only one of us injured.  I’ll call that an Excellent win for us today.  As soon as we land, the doctors take a look at Yosef and let him know he’s looking at a couple weeks in the infirmary to recover from his grave wounds.  Central also lets Kelly and myself know that we are up for promotion to Corporal.  With this new rank, I spend some time to learn a skill they call “Long Watch.”  Basically, I can fire a response shot at an enemy if they are in line-of-sight even if I can’t see them but a squadmate can.  Kelly lets me know she’s going to take the time to learn “Blademaster.”  This will allow her better aim with her sword attacks and do more damage with them.  We all settle into base and await to see what our next move is.
