Operation Fallen Glove – June 9th,2035 – Part 5

The story so far:  We received word that ADVENT found a resistance outpost.  We have moved in to rescue civilians and take out the ADVENT forces in the area.  We were already short one man due to injuries, and now another XCOM soldier has died in the battle, but we fight on…

Kabosky then proceeds to fire his cannon at the best in front of him.  He hits the beast, but the beast is still standing.  Not having a shot from inside the building, Roberts moves out and into cover behind the generator that Kabosky hid behind before.  She then takes aim with her rifle and fires at the beast.  The shots hit, and the beast falls at Kabosky’s feet.  Ye climbs down one story to a lower roof on the building and into cover and reloads her sniper rifle to be read for the heavy lancer.

The heavy lancer again makes a move towards the two civilians.  One of the civilians runs away, but the other falls dead after a hit from the electrified baton.  Central advises us that the aliens have slaughtered the resistance here, and we can’t let them get away with that.  He says we have to get control of the situation and take out those hostiles.

Roberts moves up behind some tin roofing propped up against a car and goes into cover and overwatch.  Ye remains on her lower roof and goes into overwatch also.  Kabosky moves into the corner of the building where the civilian turned into a faceless and goes into overwatch.

The heavy lancer proceeds to make a strategic move away from the squad.  As he does, Kabosky takes a reactionary shot.  Unfortunately, his shot hits some pallets between him and the lancer and do nothing to hurt the lancer at all.  As he continues to move away from us, Roberts takes her reactionary shot.  Her shot hits the mark and damages the lancer.  The lancer continues to move though and now we see that he was not retreating.  He had spied another civilian that was beyond our view.  As has been the sight numerous times today, we watch as yet another civilian is killed by ADVENT forces.

Kabosky sees the civilian that ran away from the lancer before, and makes a move towards him.  He stops short and goes into overwatch and waits for it to become faceless or the lancer to advance up him.  Roberts moves towards where the lancer disappeared and takes cover behind another car and goes into overwatch and waits.  Ye moves to the nearest edge of her roof and goes into overwatch and also waits for the lancer.

As we predicted, the lancer moves towards us and the remaining civilian.  Roberts takes her shot, but in her rush misses.  Luckily, as he continues to move forward Kabosky also gets a shot, and he hits his mark and the heavy lancer falls dead.  Central lets us know that the current area of operations is secure.  We gather ourselves and what we can find on the field and head home.

Today’s performance was poor.  We failed to rescue most of the civilians.  We saved three, but we let ADVENT kill ten.  We went into the operation with four healthy soldiers.  We’re returning with one healthy soldier, two injured soldier, and one soldier that is not making it home and died.  This war has taken a dark turn.  Before this mission, we couldn’t field a full five-man squad.  Now, we have one healthy soldier.  We need to heal and quick, and we need some luck, or the aliens may just win this second war.
