What follows is a journal written by one of the operatives in the second XCOM campaign, Alan Robertson.

Operation Fallen Glove

We’ve just received word that the aliens have amassed a huge force to strike at one of our resistance outposts in West Africa.  The outpost does not have the manpower nor experience to fight off ADVENT in these numbers.  So, we’re heading in to rescue as many civilians as we can and take out the ADVENT troops.  Recent injuries have decimated our forces.  Normally, we would field a five-man squad, but today we can only send four.  I am still injured and not part of today’s squad but will be batching from central command.  Today’s squad consists of Sgt. Kabosky (Grenadier), Sq. Gusev (Grenadier), Sgt. Ye (Sharpshooter), and Rookie Roberts.

The squad is dropped in without any concealment since ADVENT is already in the area and knows we’re coming.  They are dropped in just downfield from an RV.  Gusev makes the first move and moves up close to the RV to assist a civilian in escaping the area.  Roberts moves down from Gusev and takes cover behind a large tree.  Ye takes corner cattycorner to Roberts behind the same tree.  Kabosky takes cover just down from them behind a small boulder at the edge of a stream.

Off in the distance we can hear the discharge of a codex’s weapon.  The scream that follows shortly after indicates that one civilian has died.

Gusev moves up a short distance to take cover behind a fallen tree.  From his new vantage point he is able to spot a berserker and muton.  They also spot him and advance on his position.  This causes a nearby civilian to panic and run through nearby fire and hide inside the RV.  Deciding the berserker is the biggest threat, he lays a volley of cannon fire into its chest.  He hurts it, but it is still standing and is now enraged from the pain.  Ye decides that this thing needs to go down and now.  She uses her Deadeye skill.  This makes it harder for her to aim, but if she hits she will do more damage.  She snipes the berserker and he falls down dead.  Roberts moves to take cover behind the RV.  As she does so, she loses line of sight with the muton and instead goes into overwatch to wait to see if he moves.  Kabosky moves up slightly to take full cover behind a tree near Ye’s position and also goes into overwatch.

Inside the RV we hear the scream of the civilian as it sounds like the fire overcame him, and that means we have lost another civilian.  The muton moves to get into a better position, and as he does Kabosky lays into him with a volley of cannon fire.  His natural armor absorbs some of the bullets, but he is hurt at least.  As he moves further, Roberts takes her opportunity and blasts the muton in the back with her rifle.  The damage from her blast is enough to finish off the muton, and he falls dead.

Gusev moves up to the corner of a half destroyed building and assists another civilian with escaping.  This brings our totals to two civilians saved, and two civilians killed.  However, he also attracts the attention of a codex, heavy lancer, and trooper.  They move up on his position, and their motion causes another civilian to go fleeing from the building.  Roberts moves up to some downed trees outside the building, but she does not have an available shot to take.  Instead, she sets into overwatch in hopes the aliens will make a move.  Ye stays behind her tree and sets into overwatch as well.  Kabosky moves up closer to the building and takes cover behind another tree.  He tries to line up a shot, but his chances to hit are too small to make it worth trying.  Instead he loads a grenade into his launcher and lobs it between the codex and trooper.  The resulting shrapnel tears into both aliens and destroys some of their cover.  As per our previous encounter with the codex, after taking damage she clones herself into another psionic energy form.  This one take shape outside the building and down from our positions.
