An Episodic Journey in the Shadows of a Fantastic World
Hey guys! This is a series I'm starting that I'm super excited to share with you! Before you start reading this story I figured I better tell you some stuff. First, this is NOT a children's story! While I don't think excessive cursing will be used by any of the main characters this is an evolving story and my writing process is very different. Also this story was inspired by: The Witcher, Assassin’s Creed, Final Fantasy, Doctor Strange, Lord of the Rings, Sword Art Online, Dragon Age, Japanese Fantasy and lore, and a bunch of different stealth games. I hope these characters become as much a part of you as they have of me. My hope is that this becomes an ever evolving story and world that will strike your curiosity and a desire to know more about the mysterious places and people that I will share with you. Feel free to ask me questions about the world and characters as this will help spark my own creative juices and shape the story of our sly protagonist. As always suggestions are welcomed and I would love the participation of my readers. Enjoy and happy hunting!
Episode 6: Friends and Foes
While I had been relearning Taighi, the standardized language of all the countries within the Taighaki empire, however I still could not understand the phrase Mordin quietly uttered. The small window of light disappeared and a moment later the floor behind us retracted into a staircase leading into the true underworld. We descended into the dark den I began to hear music and the quiet discussion of gamblers. We walked through a door and the sounds erupted and mingled together, this was the criminal empire of the land. They were smart about concealing themselves, however the Zuma lived like kings in the literal underground palace. Beautiful dancers scattered the enormous Bazaar. The room opened up as we reached the center to reveal and elaborate crystalline dragon chandelier, five dragons bursting out in each direction as a sixth dove down, each dragon’s mouth held a large flame that light the center of the room. We reached the ledge and as I looked down I realized that this wasn't just a nightclub for the Zuma -- it was the capital of their entire organization. The pentagon shaped hole descended down for twelve more floors each lit by lamps almost as elaborate as the centerpiece halfway down the descent was pavilion with another enormous crystal dragon with its’ mouth roaring downwards in fury.
As I admired the literal underground palace a woman approached us with two masked Zuma guards following her. She bowed to us and as we returned the gesture she welcomed us in Taighi. As Mordin conversed with the dancer he handed her a slip of paper with two symbols etched onto it. I recognized the words even though they were in Taigi, the symbols were Zin Don, and the phrase meant “Agent of Death”. She smiled, turned around and gestured for the guards to leave; she began leading us around the den to a staircase. As we reached the top of the red flight of stairs she turned to us, “enjoy your descent my masters” she bowed once more and left. I hid my fascination with each level as we traveled downward, each level larger, more ornate, and more sophisticated than the last. We finally reached the center floor which was by far the largest with many other rooms and branches snaking out into the dark underground. The seventh dragon was clearly visible from anywhere in the room. As we finished the descent the same woman met us and greeted us.
I was taken back and as she lead us towards the center of the floor I leaned into Mordin to voice my inquiry but before I could say anything he answered, “no, she doesn't have a twin” in his low voice. We reached the center of the floor and I saw once again the ornate crystal dragon, which I could now see had two powerful jade eyes, fierce jade teeth, and a giant jade heart set inside the crystal, under was a hexagon shaped island draped in red silk, jade decor, and golden runes. It was more ornate and majestic than any throne room I had ever seen. The shadowy figure sitting in the throne was surrounded with gifts of tribute, and fanned by beautiful women. He was the true emperor, the true epicenter of wealth and power in this deep underground metropolis. As we neared the gazebo he stood slowly and said, “friend or foe”...
With his hands behind his back Mordin used hand signs (not to be confused with the magical signs I had used earlier) to tell me to bow my head and take a kneeling position. I immediately followed his instructions, and as I did so I heard him speak in speak in Taighi. I then heard two distinct sounds like the clang of wine goblets or the chime of a small bell. I saw nothing as I had closed my eyes and bowed my head fearing that my curiosity would disrupt the process of the meeting that Mordin had worked so hard to get for me. I had worked for many other organizations that were within the society’s “guest list” as it was called. These groups paid tribute to the society’s collective funds and practiced the rules of the society. Yet each one had their own rules, codes, and customs. The learning of such practices was incredibly important for individuals such as myself to gain entry into their own “guest list”. Being in such guest lists granted the same boons as full membership without the hassle of loyalty or life long service, as well as full autonomy. Mordin was one of the few members of the society who had gained entry into all of the associate’s “guest lists” a goal that I wished to achieve as well. Because of this Mordin was able to request the services of every associate group and could enjoy the privileges that came with his title as a warden. Now the fate of my future and possibly my life laid within the hands of my mentor whom I had just disgraced…
What's up nerds!!! This community is awesome! I've loved writing since I started college and I've loved video games since I was born! (almost true I started on my dad's NES when I was 4) So I decided why not do both, so I started a Youtube channel. Check it out here and give me a thumbs up! It's only a little sad I promise.
