DOOM. Hell Tried. Hell Died. Hell of a Ride

Only one hour in and it was apparent that this was something great. One hour in and it struck me how this would be an experience that would stick with me for years.

Immediately I was struck by the fantastic and bombastic yet appropriate soundtrack. The crisp visuals and imagery that has always been iconic with the Doom games are present and after an hour with the game I understood that there is greatness here. I was experiencing something glorious, something new and yet something enjoyably familiar.

Why an hour you ask? Let me explain.

I am an old gamer. I am in my mid-thirties and I have grown as games and consoles have. Hence I am one of those gamers that stops to smell the roses, looks behind every corner and takes in every detail. I am regularly blown away by the effort put into the detail in these worlds and feel I owe it to the developers to observe and appreciate their work. It is my play style. It took me only an hour of Doom to shatter this lifelong habit and embrace the no holds barred style that id Software wanted of me.

The developers of Doom do not want me to stop and examine every swinging bloody corpse or take in the view of Mars. They want me to charge in blindly, unleash hell through my shotgun and perform  seamless melee executions whilst grinning ear to ear and bopping my head to the metal soundtrack. Dear developers, I get it, I embraced it and I freakin loved it.

Almost every component of the game is hinting at playing a fast and fluid style. The smooth and quick aiming reticule, no reloads, instant climbing, instant item pickups and of course the soundtrack that instantly elevates your heart rate in sync with the visceral action.

I feel the developers of this game have really created something different, something special and something that I hope will be recognised and remembered by all gamers in the future. I truly recommend any gamer of any age or playstyle to give this a go. If you are nostalgic for the Doom of old, this is for you. If you enjoy shooters, this of course is for you and If you appreciate the iconic Doom art design, this again is for you.

If you despise demons and the thought of beating them to death with their own arm is appealing, then this is for you!

Remember embrace the chaos, play fast, play bold, play aggressive and you will understand quickly that id Software's desire to throw you into a heavenly hell is well  realized.

This is an amazing game that knows what it is, knows what it wants of you and makes damn sure you are smiling as you do it. It is my game of 2016.

Game on baby!
